Grace and the Power of the Tongue

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

Colossians 4:6

Colossians 4:6: Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

Proverbs 18:21: Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

These scriptures pose a reminder to be careful of what I speak over myself, my life, and the lives of other people. I understand that God has gifted me with a remnant of His power, the power of creation and, so, what I speak, I create. I reap the fruit of my words.

Colossians 4:6 demonstrates that the speech of a Christian must be “seasoned with salt”.

What does this mean?

To me, this means a Christian must choose to speak words that are edifying and replicate the power and will of God, our Heavenly Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ.

I feel that, to be salty, means to be edified and aware of the activity within the spiritual realm, and taking action, through word or through works, to magnify the Lord and His power.

I understand that the magnification of the Lord’s will requires a level of submission and discipline that is grounded in self-sacrifice and denial; a denial of the will and desires of the flesh and a submission to the will and desire of Yhwh and Jesus Christ.

I do struggle with submission, at times, because it is challenging to place my desires aside for God. I, often, desire to be selfish. Many time, the Lord has called me to share the gospel and the word of God with others, but out of fear and obstinance, I refuse. I understand that I must remain fixed on the eternal reward that God desires for me; for a place in His Heavenly Kingdom; I must continue to do the work of an evangelist and bring the gospel to places and people without the light of Jesus Christ.
