In a grim, dark, and dreary world filled with the elements of oppression and general hostility toward humanity, my science classes provide a refuge that unburdens me.
The study of science has become the key that unlocks my personal liberation. It grounds me in something larger than self. In a self-focused world that fosters division and stifles creativity, placing the advancement of humanity above individual self, frees me and frees others from the burden of selfish ambition.
It frees me from the demands of the world as we know it, a world that is bent toward the demise and destruction of human life and the choking of human creativity.
Peer into a microscope to find a cluster of cells and see, then, if you can be consumed by the minutia and ill-advancement of the current world.
I have fallen completely in love with science as a means and method of changing the world for our collective betterment.
I have this thought every time I step onto the downtown subway toward Manhattan or every time I behold the beauty of Manhattan’s skyline: What makes Manhattan such a powerful place? In part, it is in the mathematics our engineers use to construct a fully-functioning underground railroad. In part, it is in the physics used to construct some of the most complex architecture, globally. The power is in the minds of some of the world’s best physicians, performing some of the most complex medical procedures. In part, it is in the artistry constructed by some of the most well-trained artists in the world. It is the engineering used to design and orchestrate our technology, our fast cars and fast trains, the artistry and design in our clothes, and in the agricultural science used to grow the most vibrant, organic foods.
These elements, including the brush strokes of the starving artist, are grounded in science. More importantly, they are grounded in G-d, the creator, Who, in the beginning, created the heavens and the earth. It is all his power, from the electron, to the cell, to the rotation of the globe. He orchestrated it in perfect harmony.
